A Girl And The Prince

One day, there lived a girl named Caty. Caty was a kind - hearted girl. She was a beautiful girl. Her parents worked in a kingdom as gardener and chef of the kingdom. There was couple of wise king and queen with their son named Richard.

Once, Caty went to the kingdom to deliver her parents' lunch. Caty parked her bicycle next to the place that was usually used by the Prince. It was because she didn't know the kingdom's rule. Caty got in and directly ran to the kitchen. She suddenly stopped when she heard a loud shouted that yelled "Guard! Guard!". Everybody ran closer to see what was going on. The Prince asked the guards because he wanted to know who the owner of this bike was. Caty's parents were scared but Caty's father, with his full spirit, dared to confess that the bike belonged to Caty, his daughter. It seemed that the Prince was so angry. It could be seen from his anger face and the tone of his voice. Caty felt a pity after seeing her father, then she tried to defend her father. She said "my father is not guilty! It was my fault because i don't know the rule here". Then she took her bicycle away.

On the following day, Prince Richard felt guilty and he tried to ask apologize from Caty's parents.He ran to the kitchen and made everyone there was shock and surprised. "What can i do for you, your majesty?", asked Caty's Mom. Prince Richard expressed his willingness and Caty's parents forgave him. Prince Richard was not only asked apologize but also wanted to know more about Caty. He asked if he could meet Caty or not. Caty's parents allowed Prince Richard to meet Caty. "Your majesty, if you want to meet Caty, she is at home now". Said Caty's father.

Then Prince Richard visited Caty. He knocked at the door and when Caty open the door she was surprised. "Hi Caty" said the Prince. "How do you know my name? hmm, are you lost?" asked Caty. "Would you like to get me in?" asked the Prince. "Yes, please" answered Caty. Prince Richard asked sorry for what he had done yesterday, Caty forgave him. They were silent each other for a moment, but then suddenly Prince Richard gave her a stalk of red rose and asked "would you marry me? Well, it's hard to be explained. But do you know love at first sight?" Caty was speechless too because she didn't expect that a prince could fall in love and proposed her. "It was impossible. How could noble man will sit side by side with a poor girl like i am? Will your parents accept me and my family?" asked Caty.

Prince Richard said "You don't have to think about it. My parents will accept you" and then Prince Richard returned back to the palace.

When Prince Richard expressed about his willing, his parents agreed. Then the King and the Queen held a big weeding party and invited all people in the kingdom to celebrated this happiness. Finally, the lived happily ever after :)

Jazz music

Music may be defined as the art of organizing sounds and silences into meaningful patterns .Music is one of the eldest arts .In the world history ,every civilization is accompanied by any form of music . Thus ,music is part of every civilization.

There are many kinds of music ,such as classic,waltz,jazz,pop,and rock n’ roll.In this text we are going to discuss about jazz music .

Jazz began in the early 20^th century as music of Black Americans . It was intended for singing,dancing,entertaining in a party atmosphere.Since then,jazz continued to develop.There are many leading jazz singers ,instrumentalists,and composers in the world. Jazz also influenced almost every other kind of music.Jazz represents a blending of musical elements from Africa and Europe.Jazz  uses some European ideas of harmony and melody ,but the rhythms are more African in origin .Jazz is also known in Indonesia.Most Indonesia people know Ireng Maulana.He and his band often perform on television .His band is one of the leading jazz music bands in this country.

Gawai Dayak

Gawai Day or Gawai Dayak is a festival celebrated in West Borneo on 1^st  June every years. It is both a religious and social occasion. The word Gawai means a ritual or festival. Gawai Dayak literally means "Dayak Festival". Dayak would visit their friends and relatives on this day. Such visit is more commonly known as "ngabang" in the Iban language. Those too far away to visit would receive greeting cards.

The mode of celebration varies from place to place. Preparation starts early. Tuak (rice wine) is brewed (at least one month before the celebration) and traditional delicacies like penganan (cakes from rice flour, sugar and coconut milk) are prepared. As the big day approaches, everyone will be busy with general cleaning and preparing food and cakes. On Gawai Eve, glutinous rice is steamed in bamboo (ngelulun pulut). In the longhouse, new mats will be laid out on the ruai (an open gallery which runs through the entire length of the longhouse). The walls of most bilik (rooms) and the ruai are decorated with Pua Kumbu (traditional blankets). A visit to clean the graveyard is also conducted and offerings offered to the dead. After the visit it is important to bathe before entering the longhouse to ward off bad luck.

The celebration starts on the evening of 31^st May. In most Iban longhouses, it starts with a ceremony called Muai Antu Rua (to cast away the spirit of greed), signifying the non-interference of the spirit of bad luck in the celebration. Two children or men each dragging a chapan (winnowing basket) will pass each family's room. Every family will throw some unwanted article into the basket. The unwanted articles will be tossed to the ground from the end of the longhouse for the spirit of bad luck.

Around 6 pm or as the sun sets, miring (offering ceremony) will take place. Before the ceremony, gendang rayah (ritual music) is performed. The Feast Chief thanks the gods for the good harvest, and asks for guidance, blessings and long life as he waves a cockerel over the offerings. He then sacrifices the cockerel and a little blood is used together with the offerings.

Once the offering ceremony is done, then dinner is served at the ruai. Just before midnight, a procession up and down the ruai seven times called Ngalu Petara (welcoming the spirit gods) is performed. During this procession, a beauty pageant to choose the festival's queen and king (Kumang & Keling Gawai) is sometimes conducted. Meanwhile, drinks, traditional cakes and delicacies are served.

At midnight, the gong is beaten to call the celebrants to attention. The longhouse Chief (tuai rumah) or Festival Chief will lead everyone to drink the Ai Pengayu (normally tuak for long life) and at the same time wish each other "gayu-guru, gerai-nyamai" (long life, health and prosperity). The celebration now turns merrier and less formal. Some will dance to the traditional music played, others will sing the pantun (poems). In urban areas, Dayaks will organise gatherings at community centres or restaurants to celebrate the evening.

Traditionally, when guests arrive at a longhouse, they are given the ai tiki as a welcome. From time to time, guests are served tuak. This would be called nyibur temuai which literally means "watering of guests".

            It was first celebrated on 1^st June 1965 and became a symbol of unity, aspiration and hope for the Dayak community. Today, it is an integral part of Dayak social life. It is a thanksgiving day marking good

harvest and a time to plan for the new farming season or activities ahead.
